Molecular Internal Medicine

Mentoring in medicine

In the late 1990s we initiated a research program in molecular internal medicine for students of medicine and the life sciences at the Department of Medicine at the University of Zurich. Since its inception the program has attracted medical students, scientists and physicians from outside hospitals and abroad.
Molecular Internal Medicine sets the basis for improving scientific education in medicine and research, mentoring and guiding students, and preparing them for their careers. Students have the opportunity to present their work at international research conferences and to participate in the publications related to their dissertation work, some of them even as first authors. Consequently, theses, original research and review articles were published in highly reputable international journals. Our graduate students and fellows have received numerous awards and prizes and presented their work at scientific conferences around the world. Many of them were also received prizes for outstanding theses by the Medical Faculty of the University of Zurich and were awarded highly competitive postdoctoral fellowships by the Swiss National Science Foundation in recognition of their scientific and academic excellence.
Our aim remains to actively support and foster the career development and mentoring of students, early-career physicians and scientists in medicine and the biomedical sciences.
